5 Things You Should Know Before Ordering Seafood In Restaurants

Have you ever found yourself staring blankly at a restaurant menu, unable to decide? If you’re at a loss on what dish to opt for, know that you’re not alone. With so many different options, choosing just one dish can take a lot of work.

However, when it comes to seafood, there are some factors you need to consider before making your selection. Remember that this food is often delicate and requires precise cooking preparation, so it would be best to familiarize yourself with each seafood before placing your order.

That said, here are five things you should know before ordering seafood in restaurants:

1. Know What’s In Season

To enjoy some delicious seafood, knowing what’s in season is essential. After all, you want to ensure your meal is satisfying. Furthermore, out-of-season seafood can be incredibly expensive. It’s worth noting that when seafood is in season, there’s an abundance of it; thus, prices tend to be lower.

In addition, the seafood is of superior quality since they were caught more recently. So, how do you know what’s in season? One way is to ask the waiter or waitress at your preferred seafood restaurant. They should be able to tell you what’s available and fresh. You can also do a quick online search or consult a seasonal chart.

2. Consider Your Preparation Preferences

If you’re planning on ordering seafood at a restaurant, it’s crucial to consider your preparation preferences beforehand. Otherwise, you might end up with a dish you’re not happy with. If you like your seafood cooked all through, you’ll want to look for grilled, baked, or sautéed meals in the menu. These cooking methods will ensure that your fish is nice and moist inside without being overcooked.

On the other hand, if you prefer your fish rare or medium rare, then you’ll want to look for menu choices that are seared or pan-fried. These cooking preparations will give you a little char on the outside while keeping the inside nice and pink. Moreover, if you’re a fan of raw seafood, then you’ll want to look for restaurants that serve sushi or ceviche.

3. Watch Out For Allergies

Despite its widespread availability on restaurant menus, seafood is a common allergen. Small amounts of fish or shellfish might trigger an allergic reaction in people sensitive to seafood. Mild symptoms include irritation around the eyes and a runny nose, while severe symptoms can cause trouble breathing and swelling. In some cases, anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction, can occur.

If you have a seafood allergy, you must be aware of the potential risks before ordering in a restaurant. Talk to your waiter or waitress about your allergy and ask about the ingredients in each dish. Some restaurants may be able to accommodate your allergy by making substitutes or avoiding cross-contamination.

However, other restaurants may not be able to take the necessary precautions. Therefore, it’s always best to play it safe and choose another restaurant if you’re unsure about the quality of the seafood and the safety of the meal preparation.

4. Check For Sustainability

You might not think twice about ordering seafood when you’re out at a restaurant. However, it’s possible that the seafood you’re eating may come from a non-sustainable source. Overfishing has a destructive effect on marine life and is a significant concern in many regions worldwide. Consequently, it’s essential to ensure that the seafood you order is caught sustainably.

You can tell if a seafood dish is sustainable by looking for certain elements. It’s important to first verify that the restaurant is a certified Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) member. This organization promotes sustainable fishing practices and only certifies seafood that meets its high standards.

Then, ask the waiter or chef where the seafood was sourced from. This should raise red flags if they can’t provide you with this information. Finally, research popular seafood dishes to see which ones are most likely sustainable.

5. Consider The Portion Size Of Orders

The next time you’re out at a seafood restaurant, take a moment to consider the portion size of your order. A standard serving of fish is typically around 3 ounces or about the size of a deck of cards. However, many restaurants tend to serve much larger portions.

It’s not uncommon to see entrées weighing 8 ounces or more. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a hearty meal, it’s essential to be mindful of the calories and cholesterol that come with more significant portions.

If you’re trying to eat a heart-healthy diet, ordering a smaller portion or sharing your fish or shellfish order with others can make a big difference. Therefore, the next time you’re craving seafood, remember to consider the portion size before placing your order.

Takeaway

When you’re ordering seafood at a restaurant, it’s essential to do your research. Start with the menu and see their menu design. If they have put enough thought into creating a good menu design, you can expect the same thought going into making the dishes. Ensure you know what cooking methods are used and whether or not the seafood is sustainable. Always watch out for allergies and be mindful of portion sizes when ordering. By following this guide mentioned above, you’ll be guaranteed to enjoy a delicious and healthy meal without any regrets.

Must Have Ingredients for a Professional Baker

0

If you want to be a professional baker, then it is important to learn about the right ingredients. Some ingredients are going to stay with you throughout in your professional baking career. So it is important to have a clear idea about these must haves.

1. Yeast

The first and most important ingredient for a professional baker is yeast. Yeast is a living organism that breaks down sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol, making bread rise. Without yeast, you cannot make bread.

Some breads require active dry yeast, while others require instant or rapid-rise yeast. Active dry yeast requires to be activated before adding it to your starter.

To do this, stir it in a jar until it foams up, then cover it with cheesecloth or a paper towel and let it sit for 20 minutes. When kneaded, you can mix it with just enough flour to form a soft dough ball. This will activate it.

Instant or rapid-rise yeast is mixed directly into your starter without being activated beforehand; you can use either type of yeast in this recipe.

2. Cake flour

Cake flour is made from soft wheat, so it may be more difficult to find than other types of flour. If you’re looking for it at your local store, make sure they’ve got cake flour available before purchasing any other item. It’s used in cakes, cookies, biscuits, pie crusts (and pancakes).

3. Bread flour

Bread flour is high-gluten flour, which means it has a higher percentage of protein than all-purpose flour. This makes bread rise more elevated than other baked goods and more suitable for making pizza dough or other crusty baked goods.

Flour

Bread flour can be used in place of all-purpose recipes where you’re looking to create an especially chewy texture or add elasticity (like bagels).

Bread flour comes in many varieties: plain white, whole wheat, rye flour, or any combination thereof. There’s also the gluten-free flour alternatives.

4. Sugar

Sugar is used to sweeten a dish or as a preservative and makes cakes moist and tender. It may be necessary to use some salt in order to balance the sweetness of other ingredients. It is the must have ingredient for romantic dinners to casual takeaways.

5. Aquafaba

Aquafaba is the liquid from a can of chickpeas and can be used as an egg substitute in baking. The consistency of aquafaba can be changed by cooking time, bean type (or seasonings), and even your preference.

Some people prefer their cakes to have more air than others, so if you want something light and fluffy for your cake recipes or cupcakes, try using about 1/4 cup at room temperature for every 1 cup of all-purpose flour (like Cake Flour).

If you want something richer with less moisture content (like Cupcake Flour), add only 3 tablespoons per recipe instead!

6. Agar Agar

Agar-agar is a gelatinous substance made from seaweed. It’s used in vegan meringues, jellies, custards, and puddings.

7. Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder is a must-have ingredient for any baker. It’s used in chocolate cakes, cookies, and other baked goods.

Cocoa powder comes from roasted cocoa beans and contains a lot of fat (about 30%) and some sugar (about 15%). It has a good amount of flavonoids and antioxidants that help prevent heart disease and cancer. Cocoa powder is also rich in iron which helps keep your blood healthy.

8. Chocolate Chips

Chocolate chips are a great way to add chocolate flavor to your recipes. They’re made from chocolate and sugar, but they’re not the same as baking chocolate. They come in different styles and flavors, so choosing one that works best with your recipe is important.

Conclusion

The key takeaway from all this is that it’s important to remember what kind of ingredients work best for you if you are a professional baker.

Do You Fear Cluttering Your Kitchen? Learn When to Replace What!

0

The kitchen deserves the most attention in your house. You want to keep it updated and hygienic to avoid troubles with your health and daily routine. Generally, good upkeep extends the lifespan of this overused home area. Hence, it makes sense to review all the appliances and nooks from time to time to ensure they are doing fine. If you are not a hoarder, you will want to avoid adding unnecessary items unless required. The risk of piling can be more applicable to smaller items. You will only buy heavy-duty products like fridges, dishwashers, cooking ranges, and others when there is a genuine need. After all, it’s impossible to have two fridges in a tiny or medium size kitchen. Then, you may not want to dent your savings by indulging in frequent big-ticket purchases.

You don’t have to worry about these factors when buying a farm sink. These mostly come with reasonable price tags, and then there can be just one sink area in the kitchen. So, replacement is the only option. Plus, this is one of the most overused corners. You want to maintain your busy schedule even if your sink looks slightly dull and tired.

Nevertheless, as a reminder, cluttering doesn’t happen through these appliances. Cookware and smaller gadgets typically pose this risk because you may be unaware of their lifespan. Careful use and maintenance can increase their life expectancy, but there will be a time to bid them goodbye. So, let’s delve into this aspect.

Different types of cookware

You can divide these kitchen items into two distinct categories – nonstick utensils and stainless-steel vessels. A Chicago hotel’s chef informs that nonstick pans and pots don’t survive long. When you notice scratches in the bottom or food sticks to the base, it’s better to replace them. Some householders may replace them because of the amount of elbow grease involved in cleaning them. But there is a more practical reason to discard them immediately. Scratched cookware items like these release dangerous chemicals and damage your health.

Then, some people continue to use their stainless-steel pans and pots even after 50 years. It doesn’t pose chemical risks. Some of them become discolored or develop spots due to overuse. Still, these marks don’t interfere with the food quality. But you will want to reconsider your decision to retain them if their handles have become loose. You want to avoid hurting yourself with hot items because of the broken handle that may come out when you need it the most to tighten your grip on the utensil.

Electrical units

Coffee makers, toasters, blenders, food processors, and electric kettles are essential kitchen items that make your daily cooking tasks faster and more efficient. Toasters usually suffer due to the accumulation of crumbs that block them and don’t allow them to work correctly. Rust on the surface and the lengthy time required in toasting can be a few signs that this device needs an upgrade. With blenders, you must watch for indications like leakage in the bottom or a burning smell when used. Although high-end models last a lifetime, you may have to keep an eye on this if it’s inexpensive. Similarly, electric kettles don’t need frequent replacement if you clean them and use them properly. Still, if your kettle takes more time to heat a liquid, you can replace it.

Food processors in good shape will have their blades sharp for smooth grinding. Coffee makers reveal their health when they stop brewing your coffee as flavorful as they used to.

Kitchen tools

Graters and zesters can be the little things in the kitchen, but their contribution to your meal prep can be massive. You depend on them for handling cheese, ginger, and garlic – the most commonly used cooking ingredients. The graters need to be razor-sharp. If they demand more grating effort from your end, switching to a new option is better. When you apply more force to the grating, the tool will shift and hurt your fingers or hands. Wooden tools like rolling pins and others may develop cracks, becoming a favorite spot for bacteria. Likewise, you can decide the fate of your rubber spatulas. Cracks and breaks reveal their weakness. With knives and peelers, you don’t have to think twice if their sharpness has reduced, and they slip from your hand frequently as you exert more to do the cutting and peeling job.

Aren’t these decisions simple?

You may think these are minor issues. Such tools may not be as risky as something that causes fire or significant accidents. You must take everything seriously in the kitchen, as things sometimes go awry without any visible warnings. Nevertheless, if you didn’t know, studies suggest that as many as 322k people visit emergency rooms annually for cuts caused by knives to treat finger avulsions and lacerations. Due to choppers and slicers, about 25 thousand people visit the ER for the same treatment. Blenders and food processors account for 3500 to 8400 visits annually, while coffee maker cases can be in the range of 4500 and more.

Remind yourself of these possibilities when taking things in your kitchen for granted. Of course, these numbers need to indicate whether older tools have been the culprits. Still, precaution is your safety. A safe kitchen houses all the efficient tools in good shape and form.

Appreciating fresh kitchen interiors is one thing, but it’s crucial to think of making the environment safer as a priority. Keep stock of all the things you regularly use during cooking and serving. Avoid the urge to save a few dollars when significant risks are there. If you are okay with spending on the appearance of this place, you should take even less time to replace the most valuable items. Some homeowners get new tools to avoid the risks. However, they keep the older ones. It eventually leads to cluttering issues. Hence, be careful of this behavior or habit too. There is no fun in wasting precious square footage on something damaged. Anyway, put your kitchen on order and enjoy your cooking.

A Guide To Safe And Sustainable Food Packaging

Safe and sustainable food packaging is one of the best solutions to the global waste management problem. Many manufacturers switch to eco-friendly materials as part of their green initiatives. However, this transition can be slow and challenging since experts are still working on new and practical innovations.

Shifting to eco-friendly organic food packaging is a big step toward sustainability and reducing the impact of climate change. While using organic materials is possible through years of research, making them food-safe is extra challenging. To know more about safe and sustainable food packaging, here’s a comprehensive guide.

What To Look For

When searching for safe and sustainable food packaging, there are vital features to look for. Since food products are more vulnerable to contamination, opting for quality and safety is imperative. Here are some of the qualities you must consider:

  • Durability: Any product packaging should be durable. The durability makes an eco-friendly container safer despite handling from the manufacturer to the local stores. Food products prone to spillage require more rigid packaging to ensure their safety.
  • Grease And Moisture Resistance: Keeping the structure of food packaging despite the grease and moisture is challenging. It’s a common problem in food delivery services. As a solution, experts have developed sustainable food packs with moisture-proof linings. Aside from safety, it can also keep the food warm and fresh for longer, perfect for deliveries.
  • Insulated: Packaging is crucial to maintaining the safety and quality of food products. Since these are perishable items, extra protection against moisture and constant temperature changes is necessary. Therefore, using eco-friendly insulated packaging is a must.
  • Compostable Or Recyclable: Sustainable packaging can be categorized into two types: compostable and recyclable. Compostable materials can naturally degrade for at least two years. These types of packaging are only suitable for fresh food items.

On the other hand, recyclable options are perfect for items that require additional protection for an extended period. People can collect and process these materials to create new packaging or products for other purposes. They can be reused repeatedly without degrading the quality, making them sustainable.

These are some standard features you must look for when getting safe and sustainable food packaging. However, always consider the food you’re packaging first before getting the right options.

Costs

After considering all the crucial factors, it’s time to consider the costs. Some businesses might be hesitant to switch to sustainable packaging since it can cost more than typical plastics. This is where exploring custom packaging solutions becomes vital, as tailoring the design can lead to material savings, reduced shipping size, and better long-term cost-effectiveness. Since lowering production costs is a must for every business, the additional cost can be a huge setback.

One way to minimize costs is to find a local eco-friendly packaging supplier. Doing so will lower the shipping prices. With the growing demand for safe and sustainable packaging, finding a manufacturer you can partner with should now be easier.

Popular Options

There are many safe and sustainable food packaging options to choose from. Some of these have been utilized for decades, while some are new. With a wide range of choices, you can find one that suits your needs. Here are the most popular food packaging options in the market:

  • Food Takeaway Boxes:

Food takeaway boxes made of cardboard have replaced the use of polystyrene packaging, which is now banned in several states. Boxes are eco-friendly and economical alternatives for making food safe for delivery.

  • Wheatgrass Packaging:

One of the latest innovations in sustainable packaging is wheatgrass plastic. Containers made from these organic straws are durable, reusable, and recyclable. They’re also suitable for packing liquid products like drinks and sauces.

  • Glass Containers:

Glass containers are some of the pioneers in reusable packaging. Glass jars and bottles are versatile and economical solutions for packing a wide range of food products. These are also convenient to recycle and repurpose at home.

  • Food-Grade Stainless Steel:

Stainless steel is a highly versatile and extremely tough material. Using them for food packaging is an excellent choice since you can recycle them repeatedly without degradation. The production of food-safe stainless-steel containers is also more cost-effective in the long run, with proper recycling and repurposing.

  • Beeswax Wraps:

Beeswax wraps are suitable for lining food takeaway boxes. These look like regular wax paper, which you can wash and reuse to wrap fruits and vegetables. After eight washes, you can tear or shred them for composting.

  • Water-Soluble Films:

Water-soluble films are a great alternative to non-biodegradable cling wraps. They can be utilized for packaging fruits, vegetables, and other fresh produce sold in groceries and supermarkets. These films can easily dissolve in water, so they don’t end up in landfills.

With the technology the world has today, there’ll be more eco-friendly food packaging options that will come in the future.

The Future Of Sustainable Food Packaging

The use of safe and sustainable food packaging is expected to increase in the coming years. Due to the food industry’s environmental impact, many businesses are taking the initiative to switch to eco-friendly alternatives.

Moreover, the production of sustainable food packing is growing fast. Many investors and researchers are actively focusing on developing new organic-based, compostable materials to reduce the waste problem. They’re also establishing methods to produce more with low energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Final Thoughts

The switch to safe and sustainable food packaging is a conscious effort to tackle environmental problems while enhancing the quality of products for your consumers. Despite the challenging transition, its benefits will be worth it in the long run for your business and the planet.

6 Wine Storage Basics You Should Know

If you’re planning to start collecting a few bottles of wine, storage is one of the things you need to figure out. Wines that need long-term storage are for maturing. It is for those who seriously want to get professional-made storage. And most wines out there are made to be enjoyed right away. So, you can do well for this type of wine by remembering these tips.

1. Wine Cellar Cooling

Wine Cellar HQ says it’s important to consider your climate when choosing a cooling unit, as through-the-wall units only work if your outside temperature is less than 100°F. Humidity and temperature can cause the cork to dry out. Furthermore, finding the means to control these two elements when you’re storing wine bottles with corks is crucial. That’s because when the cork dries, it becomes brittle and might start to fall into the wine.

There are various ways to keep wines cool. You can invest in a cooling system for your wine cellar or create a vapor barrier between the insulation and the foundation wall of the storage room. Moreover, a dehumidifier in your wine storage room or cellar makes a third low-cost alternative. Dehumidifiers draw moisture from the air through absorption or cold coils and filters. They have a built-in humidistat that allows users to set up the required humidity level.

2. Avoid Exceeding Cooling Temperature

If you don’t have a cellar with a cooling unit best for wines, you can temporarily hold them inside the refrigerator. Be careful, though, because they don’t do well in long-term refrigeration.

The fridge’s temperature is lower than 45° F and can dry out corks, making it prone to cracking. Refrigerators are ideal for fresh produce and storing cooked food, but not for wines because a damaged cork can let in air that can influence its taste. In addition, avoid extremely cold places that could freeze the wine. Once the wine freezes, it could pop the cork out of the bottle.

3. Position Them Horizontally

Properly storing wine also means that you’re likely to invest in a wine rack. It’s especially true for wine bottles with cork to keep them moist.

Storing wine long-term means that corks could dry out. They lose elasticity gradually, and the older they get, the less expanding they become. As mentioned earlier, corks can turn brittle, which risks premature aging and leakage. Additionally, keeping bottles on their sides provides you with easier access and more space to store wines.

4. Keep Lights Low

Normally, you won’t mind bright lights in storage areas for your belongings. But that’s not the case with wines. Your wine storage should have dim lighting and must be away from natural lighting that emits ultraviolet (UV) rays. It could cause premature aging to your wine, other than air exposure. That’s also why most wine bottles are tinted dark. Keep your unopened wine bottles in the dark, away from fluorescent lights and sunlight.

5. Avoid Shaking The Bottles

Theoretically, some think that vibration could chemically alter the contents of wine bottles. It’s common to find wine collectors who take storage seriously and fret over the vibrations caused by electronics inside the storage room. But there is barely any evidence to support its influence on wines.

Although older wines in storage keep sediments inside, vibrations could keep them from settling down. Sometimes, it could make the wine gritty, which is also the last thing you want. If you don’t live in a location where many causes of vibrations could shake wine bottles, you can keep these bottles safe.

6. Properly Store Away Opened Bottles

If you have been drinking wine for health or leisure at home, you must know how to preserve wine once opened. Wine bottles that have been opened can last three to five days as long as the cork is tightly placed.

You can use wax paper around the cork to make it easier to slide it back in place on the bottle. It will also help prevent the cork bits from dropping inside the liquid. If the cork has been compromised or discarded, you can replace it with a rubber wine stopper to effectively seal the bottle. Otherwise, you can get a vacuum pump to create an airtight seal and suck the air out of the bottle.

In Conclusion

Wine is best enjoyed on any occasion, but it needs proper storage to retain its freshness for as long as possible. For beginners at wine keeping, it’s worth knowing how to easily store away wine in the most convenient of ways. You don’t have to buy expensive gadgetry to keep your wine fresh. You only need to keep these tips in mind for wines you can consume as soon as they are on sale.

These days, there’s a subscription box for every type of food. Beverages like coffee, tea, and wine are popular options for subscription boxes. However, there are also plenty of recurring packages for dry goods like beans, pasta, and salami. You can even get boxes of specialty foods like mustard, hot sauces, and honey.

Family members like to find packages at Luna’s Confectionery Corner that include unique and delightful candies to share during special occasions. These curated boxes add a sweet touch to celebrations and make for thoughtful, memorable gifts.

Order a subscription box for a foodie friend to continue to delight them regularly, reminding them that you care year-round.

Sponsor a Trip to a Food Festival

Many food festivals themselves have surprisingly low admission fees or are free altogether. However, it can cost quite a bit to travel to the event. Not only that, but it also can be expensive to try specialty foods at the event.

If your foodie friend has been itching to attend a food festival but has been struggling to justify the cost, give them a hand and help pay for part of the trip. If you’re also a big food fan, you could provide transportation and lodging so that your friend can spend all their money on specialty eats.

Cookbooks and Biographies

Your food-loving friends may already be way ahead of the game. For someone who already knows every cafe in the city, who has mastered kitchen protocol decades ago, and who seems to know everything there is to know about food, provide them more knowledge.

When scouting for cookbooks for a foodie, go beyond the basics. With the internet at our fingertips, you can easily find a recipe for anything imaginable. Try looking for cookbooks with specific themes, techniques, history, or personality.

For a foodie interested in the roots of cooking, you can grab a book on the history of African American food. Foodie friends who love cultural delights will appreciate a cookbook on ethnic cuisines such as Vietnamese, Thai, or Greek. For a fan of televised cooking content, get a cookbook written by a celebrity chef.

Many foodies also love biographies of famous and innovative chefs. If you know of an area of interest your friend has, there are bound to be books that can advance their knowledge on the topic.

Choosing the Best Gift For Your Foodie Friends

No matter what, foodies are known for their love for gourmet cuisine. As long as you’re taking the time to think about them and their passions, they’re sure to love any food-related gift you find for them.

Once again, you don’t have time to spend the entire day cooking appetizers. As such, you can try making a few slices of bruschetta. All you need is a baguette, cooked garlic and onion, olive oil, and tomatoes.

You can also get cheese and crackers or try having a bowl of guacamole with pita chips. Lastly, the standard vegetable salad with a few berries thrown in makes a delicious first course.

Pick a Romantic Dessert

When choosing a romantic dessert, remember that you will both feel full after appetizers and the main meal. You don’t want a dessert that’s too filling, so keep it simple. For instance, you can get a couple of cupcakes from your local bakery or serve ice cream with whipped cream and a handful of blueberries.

Another romantic dessert option is chocolate-covered strawberries. For example, you could get a FruitFlowers® bundle to get a sweet dessert as well as a gorgeous flower bouquet that makes a beautiful table centerpiece. Why not take care of two tasks on your to-do list at the same time?

Shop for All Groceries a Few Days Before Your Dinner

Make a list of all the food items you need to get. Go out a couple of days before your planned dinner date to pick up the groceries at your local supermarket. Completing the shopping ahead of time allows you to get a last-minute item elsewhere in case you didn’t find it at the first store.

Set Up Your Cooking Station the Day Before

The day before, get all of the cutting boards, knives, cooking utensils, pans, and pots that you will use. Put these items at your cooking station and organize them well. Chop up any vegetables you’re going to use and store them in the refrigerator.

That way, you can get straight to cooking your dinner the night of your date.

Plan Out the Decorations and Set Up the Table

Put out any romantic decorations you have around the house. Do you have flower petals from that wedding when your daughter was a flower girl? Spread the petals out on the table.

Set up candles and light them a few minutes before dinner. Choose your best linens, silverware, and wine glasses. If you have any fine china, a romantic dinner date is a perfect time to use it.

Start Cooking a Few Hours Beforehand

Now, it’s time to start cooking your appetizers and main meal. Give yourself at least a couple of hours to complete dinner. You should double-check the recipe instructions so that you don’t miss a thing. Taste a portion of the meal before serving to see if it needs any more spices and seasonings. Don’t forget to add a few garnishes and plate the food nicely.

Have a Backup Plan Just in Case

It’s always a possibility that you could accidentally burn your dinner. If that’s the case, you’ll need a backup plan. You want to have something else to eat in case your main meal is burnt to a crisp. Have the phone number of your local Italian eatery on hand or put that frozen pizza in the fridge.

Before You Go

If you follow the instructions above, you will have a lovely and amazing night with your significant other. Turn on your favorite music in the background. Have a nice conversation while sipping on white wine and finishing dessert. Enjoy your romantic dinner date!

How to Save Money on Groceries

Ibotta

One of the best ways to save money on groceries is using Ibotta. This phone app has saved me over $2500+ since I enrolled! It is a free app that you can download to your phone and earn rebates for items that you buy at most major retailers like Walmart, CVS, Target, etc. Each week, there are different bonuses to earn extra cash as well. Redeem your earnings into your bank account, PayPal, or lots of gift card options. To join, click here and earn $10 dollars after submitting your first receipt.

Saving Money on Gas

Another app that has saved me a ton of money is Upside. It saves you money on gas but also has discounts on certain restaurants and gas station convenience items. Whether you’re heading to the grocery store, work or school most likely you’ll be driving a car. So, saving on every fill up at the gas station can actually make a big difference over time. A few dollars saved every week will add up quick.

I recommend signing up for Upside, a free app that you can use to save money on gas and restaurants. I’m using it every time I fill up and I’m glad I do because it’s money I would otherwise be losing. Also, don’t forget that sometimes they have great discounts at Pizza places, sometimes 25% off or more!

Coupons.com App

There’s no longer the need to print coupons now that Coupons.com has its own app with digital coupons. Many of the coupons available are also items listed on Ibotta, so you can get double the savings! Just keep in mind that paper coupons cannot be combined with the digital coupons on Coupons.com, so you can only save with one or the other. Link your store loyalty cards to make savings easy or submit receipts to the Coupons.com app after shopping. You will receive payment usually within the same day to your PayPal account.

Thrive Market

Thrive Market is my favorite online grocery retailer. It offers many healthy options if you’re looking for non-gmo, organic foods. To save money, search for items made by the Thrive brand or you can buy name brand items as well. Although it lacks in fresh foods like produce, you can find many shelf stable and frozen foods, as well as beauty products, cleaners, pet foods, health supplements, and many more. Shipping is free for orders over $49 and Thrive sends emails with coupons almost every day. The small yearly fee comes out to be about $5 a month but is definitely worth it when combining sales prices with coupons and for the convenience of having groceries shipped to your door! To join, click here and get 40% off your first order & free gift up to $60.

These are some of the great products I’ve bought in the past:

Lidl and Aldi

My favorite grocery chains are Lidl and Aldi which seem to be popping up everywhere. In my opinion, they have the lowest everyday prices and even have items sometimes marked down. The Lidl rewards program is a must if you want to apply digital coupons and earn rewards for spending a certain amount of money on each shopping trip. Aldi is fun to shop at because of the markdowns on seasonal items which are sometimes up to 50% off. I would recommend shopping at either one if you are trying to stay within your grocery budget.

Other Money Saving Tips

Energy Efficient Cooking Techniques

I’ve found that using the right cooking appliances also helps me save money by cooking food in a more efficient way. The Instant Pot and air fryer are prime examples of how you can save time and money by cooking faster and efficiently. Also, don’t forget to utilize your grill or smoker during the summer months. It’s not only fun to eat outdoors, but you’ll save money on your cooling bill by not heating up your kitchen.
